Chuck Taylor® Sport Shoes: The Story,

With the idea to supply the day’s sporting youth with their shoes, Marquis M. Converse founded the Converse Rubber Shoe Company by 1908. The first performance basketball shoe, the All Star® where introduced in 1917.

Charles “Chuck” Taylor, bought of pair of the revolutionary Converse All Star shoes in 1918, then he was a seventeen-year-old passionate basketball player from Columbus, Indiana. Once Chuck put on his first pair of Converse All Star shoes, a whole new era in basketball emerged. Chuck would soon become an All-American high school star, and eventually play for the New York Celtics, Buffalo Germans and Akron Firestones.

Inspired by the original All Star shoe, Chuck Taylor went to the Chicago Converse sales office with inventive ideas to improve the shoe and impressed the company’s leaders. Chuck Taylor joined Converse in 1918 and immediately put his new ideas into a new version of the All Star. He changed the tread of the shoe to create even more traction and added the ankle patch to create more support and protect the ankles of players who were mastering the “fast break.” The new improvements allowed players to cut and move like never before. As a result, basketball players were able to play with more speed and agility.

Throughout the 20th century, Converse again and again introduced to generations innovative footwear that defined sports footwear categories and became standard issue equipment. Chuck Taylor All Star shoes, popularly known as “Chucks,” have since transcended cultural and socio-economic boundaries and evolved beyond performance into an American and global youth symbol of originality and individuality.
